How to Choose Quality Supplements
The supplement industry is largely self-regulated. That means athletes must be their own quality control. This guide teaches you how to evaluate any supplement before buying.
Read Ingredient Labels
Every ingredient should be listed with its dose. If you can't see exactly how much of each ingredient is in the product, move on.
Avoid Proprietary Blends
Proprietary blends hide individual ingredient doses under a total blend weight. This makes it impossible to know if key ingredients are dosed effectively.
Look for Third-Party Testing
Independent certifications like NSF Certified for Sport, Informed Sport, or USP verify that what's on the label is in the product β and that contaminants are screened.
Evaluate Cost Per Serving
The most expensive product isn't always the best. Calculate cost per gram of active ingredient, not cost per container. Simple, unflavored products are often the best value.
Red Flags
- Extreme performance claims
- "Proprietary" or "matrix" blends
- No third-party testing listed
- Excessive artificial colors and fillers
